On Friday, 26 October 2012 most muslims across the globe celebrated Eid.
'Eid ul adha' is celebrated by muslims world wide to honour the willingness of the Prophet Ebrahim(Abraham) to sacrifice his young first born son Ismaeel(Ishmael) his sons acceptance to be sacrificed when God ordered them to do so, before God intervened to provide Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead.
On this day Muslims sacrifice a cow, sheep, goat, buffalo or camel. One third of the meat is given away to neighbours and friends, and another third or more is donated to the poor and needy.
The story of Ibrahim's sacrifice
Eid-ul-Adha celebrates the occasion when Allah appeared to Ibrahim in a dream and asked him to sacrifice his son Ismaeel as an act of obedience to God.
The devil tempted Ibrahim by saying he should disobey Allah and spare his son. As Ibrahim was about to kill his son, Allah stopped him and gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead.
Note: This story is also found in the Jewish Torah and the Christian Old Testament (Genesis 22). Here God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, his son with Sarah. Ismaeel was his son with Hagar.
