WOMANS DAY

"You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock"

Women are just WOW ! We get our very own public holiday. Hooray for us!

9 August 1956

They stood peacefully in front of the Union Building. Twenty thousand women, with babies in hands and on their backs displaying discipline and dignity chanting the words "Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo (You have tempered with the women, you struck a rock)"

The march organized by The Federation of South African Women, led by Helen Joseph the White, Lillian Ngoni the African, Rahima Moosa the Indian and Sophie Williams the Coloured, protesting the pass laws and women rights, was a major success.

The women of 1956 asked for what were their rights, the rights which we as women enjoy today.

How amazing were these women? Standing up for themselves. Let this be an example and source of inspiration for the women of not only South Africa, but the rest of the world as well. Stand up, unite, believe in yourselves and make a difference that will last a lifetime.

How will you be spending your Woman's Day?
